How to Unlock a Steering Wheel

2022 Ford Edge Interior

If you’ve ever tried to move your steering wheel and find that it’s stiff and stays in place, it means that it’s “locked.” This often happens unintentionally, and it’s no cause for concern. A locked steering wheel can also cause you to have trouble turning your key in the ignition. You can lock your steering wheel intentionally as an extra level of safety and security around Plymouth with a few easy steps. The service team at Morrie's Minnetonka Ford has everything you need to know about how to unlock a steering wheel in the guide below – check it out!

How to Unlock a Steering Wheel: Step-by-Step Guide

Unlocking a steering wheel is easy as long as you follow the proper steps. Just get behind the wheel, and do the following:

  1. Pull the steering wheel down in the same direction you did when the wheel was originally locked.
  2. If you’re not sure which direction to pull in, try both. You’ll be able to tell the right direction because the wheel will move a little.
  3. Hold the steering wheel in the right direction, and insert your key into the ignition. Start up the engine, and the wheel should unlock.
  4. If the wheel doesn’t unlock or if the engine doesn’t start, try turning the steering wheel in the other direction, and repeat the step above.

Unlocking a Steering Wheel: Tips to Keep in Mind

Unlocking a steering wheel is easy, but you should still keep a few tips in mind so that you don’t accidentally damage your wheel or ignition:

  • Avoid Using Brute Force: If you force the steering wheel too hard in one direction or the other, you may damage the steering mechanism. Try applying light pressure to the wheel while following the steps above.
  • Try a Different Key: A locked steering wheel may be caused by a worn-out key rather than an issue with the wheel itself. Try a different key if you have one, or make a service appointment with Morrie's Minnetonka Ford, so we can replace it.

How to Lock Your Steering Wheel Intentionally

If you’re outside Maple Grove and want a bit of extra security when you leave your vehicle, you can lock your steering wheel intentionally for another level of theft deterrent. This is an easy process:

  1. Turn off your car, and take the keys out of the ignition.
  2. Turn the steering wheel one way or the other until you hear a click.
  3. Your steering wheel will lock until you return, unlock the steering wheel, and start your car.
