What Causes a Transmission to Slip?

Transmission Cross Section Close-Up
You may have come across the term “transmission slipping” while you’re out and about in Plymouth, but what exactly does this mean? What causes a transmission to slip? It’s not necessarily a sign that your transmission is failing, but it does mean that you should come see a service technician as soon as possible. The transmission is possibly the most important component of your vehicle, so it’s important that it stays running in the best condition possible. In the guide below, the service team at Morrie's Minnetonka Ford goes over the transmission slipping signs and causes, so you can stay informed on the road.

Transmission Slipping Signs

If you notice any of the following signs while you’re out on the Maple Grove roads, it could be a sign that your transmission is slipping. Be on the lookout for these red flags, and contact our service team right away if you notice them:

  • Engine chugs or revs
  • Acceleration is weak or slow
  • Shifting gears is difficult
  • Strange noises like grinding or whining
  • Strange burning smell
  • Illuminated check engine light

Reasons Why a Transmission Is Slipping

So, now that we know what the signs of a transmission slipping are, let’s talk about what may be the root cause:

  • Transmission fluid: Transmission fluid is essential to keeping your transmission running smoothly, so if it’s not at the proper level, your transmission may run sluggishly.
  • Defective solenoid: Transmission solenoid is an electro-magnetic component that controls how your transmission fluid flows throughout the machine. If it’s defective, your transmission may not be receiving enough fluid.
  • Damaged transmission bands: Transmission bands link the transmission gears together and will cause the transmission to slip if they’re worn down.
  • Clutch issues: If you drive a car with a manual transmission, the clutch also needs fresh transmission fluid to run efficiently–if the fluid levels are off, the clutch won’t work properly and will cause the transmission to slip.
  • Worn gears: Like anything, gears wear out over time and need to be replaced. Keeping your transmission fluid at the proper levels will maximize the lifespan of your gears.
  • Torque converter problems: Your torque converter, as the name suggests, is what converts engine power into torque. If there’s a problem, it can cause the transmission to slip as well as issues like burning, smoking, gears, jumping, failing to go into gear, or a complete blowout.
