What Can Cause My Ford’s TMPS Light To Come On?

November 19th, 2021 by

When you drive along on your morning commute, are you plagued by a small, unnerving yellow light with an exclamation point in the middle pop up on your dashboard? You may be curious as to what this alert may mean and what it holds in store for your day-to-day drive. Whether you’re a brand new driver or have been on the road for some time, dashboard lights can prove to be panic-inducing symbols, but you won’t have to worry for long. Our Minnetonka Ford service center is here to tell you what can cause your Ford’s TMPS light to come on.

What is a TPMS Light?

Your Ford’s TMPS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) light alerts you to low tire pressure. Your TPMS helps you to avoid potentially unsafe situations by monitoring the air pressure in your tires and alerting you when one of them drops 25 percent or more below its recommended pressure. Your dashboard will display either the official TPMS symbol or a graphic indicating which tire is in need of air.

Reasons Your Ford’s TPMS Light Might Be On

Your Ford’s TPMS light may be on for a number of different reasons, but there are two that seem to be the most common:

Low tire pressure. When your TPMS light comes on, it typically means that your tire pressure is low. This is an easy fix! Simply fill your tire up with air to the recommended PSI and you should be all set.
A drastic rise or drop in temperature. If there is a dramatic rise or drop in temperature, your TPMS light might pop on. In this instance, your light should turn off in about one day.
A tire puncture. If you’ve been filling your tire with air but your TPMS light stays on, you may have a puncture in your tire. Schedule a service appointment with our Ford service center ASAP.
